It's just 36 hours after Katung was announced the winner of the first ever Big Brother Nigeria and everybody, but everybody wants to grab some of the man's time! Naturally, he places high priority on Bigbrothernigeria.com, thanks to our faithful coverage of the show and the fact that we're the first stop for fans of discernment.
So, this morning, a very excited Tshidi C. managed to sit down for a long (and lovely) phone call with K-Black himself. Suffice it to say that everything you thought about the man is true. He is honest, intelligent, kind, clever and funny. And he got to grips with your questions in an honest, thoughtful and forthright manner. What can we say? Kudos to the big guy. Congratulations, Katung, and here's wishing you all the best for the future!
Bimbo: Which part of the show did you like the most? Katung: Oh my God! I loved Tuesdays! It was my highlight, when the Tasks came. Especially the mental Tasks, I preferred them. It showed what line of thought everybody had inside. It showed a little sign of somebody you never knew was there. The movie Task, the riddles, these were my best.
ibitola sharafa: What was your most memorable moment in the House, and why? Katung: The day Ebuka left. That was like, whoa! I didn't see it coming. And the tears came, no matter how much I tried to stop them. I had to go ahead and actually see it and let it happen.
Fionnuala: Knowing you come from humble beginnings in Kaduna, what are you going to do to spotlight the growing potential in the state? Katung: Look, I can't save the world. I'm gotta start from one point. A human being's basic instinct is for self-preservation. Thus, the point I'm going to start from is me, and then spread out to my family, and then my extended family. The little I get I'll spread out, and hopefully it'll empower others. It's the same situation in all places of power, then people will get personal power of their own, but it's a process. It doesn't happen overnight.
Trish: Katung why were you flirting with Sandy? Katung: It was really funny. It was just playing. She has an ass that is so big, and we named the ass 'Bosca'. It brought a lot of laughs. It kept a smile on everybody's face. By the way, on Friday night during that coin game, we're certain that Gaetano dropped a coin when he asked if anybody wanted to kiss me apart from Ify, just to stir trouble! Yes, Gaetano, we're onto you!
chinny: Do you regret nominating your friend Ebuka and how do you intend to compensate him knowing that his fans like me rallied support for your winning? And what about the reasons for nominating Frank? Katung: I did it to focus my mind, saying if I could nominate my best friend in the House, there was no-one else I couldn't nominate. If we were truly friends and it came down to it, he would've too. We've laughed about it now. I felt bad, but I also had to keep my mind on track. As for Frank, well, it's a game, you play the game. He had this way of doing better and rubbing everybody's face in it. It was his way of playing the game. It was nothing personal, really.
May: Compare yourself now and before BBN, what would you say is the most significant change? Katung: I'd say it’s made me appreciate people and time more. I've been able to grow in the sense of putting people before me. It's taught me the only way up is down, in terms of humility. Also, about curbing excesses. Life is a lot simpler if we think more and appreciate more. In the House, for example, there were times when our budget wouldn't have lasted me 2 days on the outside, but we made it work for all of us for a week. And using time wisely. You had to be alert and ready.
yemi : So now that you have won how will you get across to your fans and show appreciation to them, cos I am your biggest fan! Katung: I still wanna be seen and heard by the whole of Africa. I applied once for a job at Channel O. I wanna do the same kind of things Kabelo does. I wanna take my skill at broadcasting to entertainment TV. Channel O is the place to be. Kabelo and the others, they're people I love. They reach out to the crowd. Then, when I'm up in everybody's face and I'm a bigger brand, I'll do my clothing line. It'll make people feel closer to me. Those are the two major areas. And the website, of course.
Oloyede Oladipupo: Katung, now that you are a star, what do you intend to do to make Nigeria and the world at large a peaceful place for mankind? (From your experience in the peaceful atmosphere the BBN Program was conducted) Katung: Trust me, a kind smile many people love and need. A smile alone can ease the heart. I don't have specifics yet, but being the good person that I know I am, I know I can make a difference. Through TV and stuff like that, I can keep kids off the street, send shout outs to different countries. You know.
Betina: I'm sure you must have found out the battle for the money was between you and Francisca. Did you ever believe she would have been amongst the last four? What do you think still kept her in the House? Comment also on Francisca's self confidence. Katung: I'll start by saying everybody in that House could've been up to win the money. There were none who was a greater threat or lesser threat. Still, when Olisa announced at that last Sunday show that the 11th Housemate to go was ...dum dum dah... no-one! I thought, wow, because that week in the Tasks was her weakest week. As for her confidence, if I'd been nominated 4 times and they'd kept me in, I'd be the most self-confident man anywhere. So I think her confidence grew with time.
orba ifeyinwa blessing: How do you feel when you heard your name as the winner? Katung: Wow!... I'm still... It's still resounding in my head right now! I couldn't believe it. It felt like it's not happening. It feels like a dream even though I am most definitely awake!
suzanne: Have you ever considered Franca a threat to you and at what point did you feel that way? Katung: Towards the end of the show I felt it. Francisca was nominated 4 or 5 times and the crowd kept her in. When the evicted Housemates came back to ask us questions and Yinka asked her if she thought the public kept her in because of sympathy about the Ebuka thing, it gave me insight into what the world outside was thinking. I thought, whoa, this girl might be up in my face. I realised, they kept her in over some of the other more interesting Housemates. They love her on the outside, so be careful.
Tommy: Any plans for your website and coming to SA? Katung: OK, I would love to come, we all would. We are still working on that. That would be awesome. As for the website, certainly, of course. It's the easiest way to reach people. You can expect a blog soon.
Leonie Badenhorst: Why did you never kiss Ify fully on the lips? Was it because the other Housemates did and you kept us waiting? Or is it because of her boyfriend being out there - showing respect? Katung: Um...there were three things. Firstly, because of her boyfriend. And secondly, kissing Ify on the lips, it should come mutually. I shouldn't just rush in and do it and look like a desperado. And thirdly, we're friends, and with all due respect, he is her boyfriend and I can't assume anything when I was just getting a few smiles.
remi omojowolo: Congrats Katung. Do you think you would still have won if you had entered from the very beginning like every other Housemate? You know you were like free for 3 weeks. Katung: Now, the three weeks in the Hotel gave me time to think a lot and relax my nerves, so I came into the House a lot more composed. But even before that I gave Big Brother Nigeria a whole lot of thought, and trust me, I would have taken the same calm, crazy self forward no matter what time I went in.
Awoz: Would you carry the other Housemates with you on trips? Katung: I can't sponsor the other Housemates on trips, but together we're all trying to plan something where we can all travel through Africa maybe and do some good work and appearances. Say 'hi' to the fans. We're trying to get some sort of forum off the ground to effect things. The strategising is still very much in the beginning levels.
Sais Kyejo: Now that you have the grand prize, what is your next move? Start your own music production line? Katung: I don't know about music production. Considering my love for music, it sounds good, but first I must do the things I can do easily. Then one day I can wake up and do the things I find more challenging. Long term I'd like to consider it.
bee: Katung, what type of clothes do you intend to design? Casual, office wear or what? Katung: Lovely question! I have a flair for casual things. Those things with printing, branding, that kind of thing. That's one area. Did you see what Sammy was wearing when he visited? Also those kind of African clothes, African design. I have clientele to reach in that area. Another aspect is formal clothes. My policy is simple is best or, less is more. Nothing too busy, so you can look serious but simple. So those three major categories.
phosy: What are the strategies you used that enabled you win this show? Katung: Initially what I did was to nominate Ebuka who was the closest person to me in the House. I wanted to be able to see if I could go for the strongest links - even though Ebuka didn't leave when I nominated him. And then the other one was more reactive than proactive. I took advantage of situations to work for me. I participated fully in the Tasks but I made sure I still stood out. I showed a person can express himself and still live with people and not set the House on fire.
wasiu adewale: Please can you tell me your main purpose of participating in Big Brother Nigeria, is it because of the money or another thing [else]? Katung: OK, I went in for 2 things - A small time dream and a big time dream. The small time dream was to use Big Brother as a platform to launch myself for designing clothes and a broadcasting career. It's the perfect platform for selling myself. Even if I didn't win, it would be a win/win situation. The cherry on the cake was the $100 000. So I did it for 2 reasons: To stay in the picture and to win. Winning the money wasn't a bad thing. It's great.
ijeoma: Katung, how do you feel seeing Ebuka and Gideon? Have the others been happy for you? Katung: You cannot imagine what that meant to me. I was so happy that they were pleased about things turning out well for me. They were there for me, and so shall I be my brothers' keeper.
Innocentia: I just want to find out what is going to happen to your relationship with Ify just think you both make such a wonderful couple but I know it's up to you both... Katung: My relationship with Ify is not something I'm gonna lose. I hold her in very high regard. I wanted more from her in the House but there were no such results, for obvious reasons. But we have a very good friendship, a very good relationship, a very tight relationship. I am hoping that things work out differently now. Mudiaga was at the show on Sunday, but I didn't get a chance to meet him. It was so crazy there I didn't even have more than five minutes with my mother. There was no time.
mazah monday: What do you intend to do for your family now you've emerged the winner? Katung: Trust me, things have been shaky at home. We are comfortably off financially, but there's this thing where the government allows you to buy the House you live in after you've lived there a number of years. The price they put on our House was high. It was going to takes us years to pay. But now, with the money, I can help a lot.
Nozipho: Many of the Big Brother series around the world tend to bring out the more common, baser instincts of human nature. The BBN Housemates seemed higher, more spiritual, nicer. There was more romance, less fighting than your average Big Brother show. Why was BBN so different? Katung: Many people think Big Brother is a place you go express yourself. That doesn't mean "Bitch, I'll slap you". It means express yourself in a way nobody knows is inside. Many people thought it wouldn't work in Nigeria. All of us went in thinking the same thing - Nigerians aren't just the bad things you've heard. We're talented, spiritual, we look within ourselves. It's an African thing. We bonded because of oppression. We used the opportunity to say we love ourselves, we love Nigeria, we love Afric
