Big Brother Nigeria
DAY 49/91
About
Big Brother House Rules

The Big Brother Game

The primary elements of the Big Brother game are:

·No information from the outside world.
·No communication with family, relatives, loved ones and friends.
·The nominations and evictions from the Big Brother House.
·The presence of cameras and microphones throughout the house at all times.
·Recording 24 hours a day that which is happening in the House.

Any breach of the game rules is punishable by Big Brother.

And remember…
Big Brother reserves the right to change the rules at any time.

Language

Because of the scale of the Big Brother production it is not possible to make allowances for more than one language on the show. For this reason the language of the house is English. But because this television programme is first and foremost uniquely Nigerian, Big Brother recognises that some housemates may from time to time communicate in Pidgin English. This is acceptable, but it is important to stress that Big Brother Nigeria is being beamed to 53 other African countries and surrounding territories which may not understand Pidgin English, and because of this Big Brother encourages English as the primary means of communication. Housemates may not conduct protracted, lengthy or conspiratorial conversations in Pidgin English – this will be seen as a contravention of the conspiracy talk rule.

Nominations

One of the challenges during your stay in the Big Brother House is the Nomination process. Big Brother understands that it is not always easy to nominate a fellow Housemate for eviction. It can be even more difficult to be nominated yourself.

Nominations will usually take place as follows:

·Housemates will be called individually to the Diary Room to make a nomination.
·At Big Brother’s request, each Housemate will give the name of two housemates that they think should leave the House.
·A Housemate may not nominate him\herself.
·Nominations must be justified and clear reasons given.
·The nomination must be honest and sportsmanlike. It is forbidden to agree with others on which way to nominate.
·A Housemate who refuses to make a nomination may be penalized or disqualified.
·A minimum of two Housemates who receive the most nominations will be up for eviction.
·Housemates may never discuss whom they have nominated or intend to nominate.
·Should a new contestant be introduced to the House they cannot nominate nor be nominated during their first week in the House.
·The final say will lie with the viewers, who will vote to decide which of the nominated Housemates stay and which one will be evicted from the House.

Voting

There are 12 participants from all over Nigeria, however 53 other African countries and surrounding territories will have access to the satellite broadcast. Viewers in all these countries are eligible to vote by telephone, mobile phone, sms or the Internet.
So… here’s how it works:

·Viewers will vote to evict the housemate they wish to see leave the Big Brother house.
·The housemate with the majority vote will leave the house.
In the final week the vote changes from a negative to a positive vote and viewers will be asked to vote for their favourite housemate and select an ultimate winner.

Deadlock Mechanism

In the event that there is a deadlock between two of the three nominees, a spinning wheel with the names of the deadlocked nominees on it will be activated in the Live Show. Whichever name the pointer lands on will then be evicted. Fate will decide…

Evictions

The usual pattern is that housemates nominate and the audience vote to evict. Big Brother may decide to reverse nomination and eviction roles during the series, so that viewers will be invited to nominate housemates and the housemates will vote to evict one of them. The audience will vote for the individual they would like to see leave the House.

Big Brother will announce to the House the viewers’ decision and who has to leave the House.

Unless Big Brother decides otherwise, the evictions will take place on Sunday evening and in accordance with Big Brother’s instructions.

Conspiracy

Conspiracy is forbidden.

By “conspiracy” Big Brother includes:
·a housemate insinuating or implying who they might nominate. eg: “I hope X and Z are up this Sunday.” “I know who I am nominating” while nodding in X’s direction. “Those two are on my list.”
·a housemate insinuating or implying who they would like to see evicted. eg: “I would like to see X leave this Sunday”.
·any alliances that might directly affect nominations and evictions. ie: an agreement between parties never to nominate each other.
·a housemate implying or insinuating who they have nominated, or did nominate as long as that person is still in the house.
·A housemate conducting a lengthy conversation using only Pidgin English will be construed to be in contravention of this rule.

Big Brother asks you to enter into the spirit of this rule, so that the game may remain as fair, honest and sportsmanlike as possible.

Conspiracy and conspiracy talk will result in the party being punished.

New Occupants

In the event of a Housemate leaving the House, for whatever reason, Big Brother may decide to bring in a new Contestant. The new Contestant would not be eligible for nomination for their 1st week in the House. The current occupants cannot ask the new occupant(s) any questions regarding the outside world. The new arrival is forbidden to talk about events in the outside world, and will be ejected if they break this rule. New occupants will not be brought in after the start of the 8th week.

If one of the ‘late arrivals’ ends up winning Big Brother they will receive the full prize money of 100 000 USD.

Big Brother may decide to bring in new occupants for any reason whatsoever, and reserves the right to change the rules at any time.

Pets

The pets in the house are the responsibility of each and every housemate occupying the Big Brother house. A separate housekeeping manual is supplied and includes a section on pet care and maintanance. Big Brother will supply the food and any additional item required for the upkeep of the pets.
The pets may not be neglected, ill-treated or eaten.

Disqualification and Voluntary Exit

Beside evictions, there are two other ways in which housemates can leave the house.

i. Disqualification
Housemates will be disqualified by Big Brother if they have broken any of the rules or undermined the world of Big Brother. In this event they cannot return and may be replaced.

ii. Voluntary exit
Participation in the Big Brother project is entirely voluntary. Housemates are free to leave the House whenever they want. This is called a “voluntary exit”.
However a Housemate who wishes to leave the House must follow these procedures:
·Firstly they should inform Big Brother of their plans in the Diary Room.
·After they have talked to Big Brother, they need to inform their housemates that they want to leave and tell them why.
·Once a Housemate has announced their departure to Big Brother, they will have to stay in the House for a further 24 hours so that Big Brother can make the necessary arrangements.
·A Housemate who leaves voluntarily must follow Big Brother’s instructions about how they are to leave the House.
·Once a participant has left the House they cannot return and they may be replaced.

Food & Ordering

i.Basics
A dietician has been consulted about what basic foodstuffs should be provided in the house. Care has been taken to ensure that, even if no additional food is bought, no one in the house will find themselves undernourished.
Basic foodstuffs will be provided in the storeroom. This room will only befor ½ an hour a day and housemates are expected to take all the food they require for that day during this time.

During your first week in the House there will be precisely enough dry goods delivered to last you your entire stay in the house. You will need to ration these supplies and make sure they last right through to the end of the process. Should these basic dry goods be exhausted, housemates will need to use their weekly budget to obtain more. Therefore, please keep an eye on these supplies. You can bake about three loaves a day with the flour.

Perishables will be replenished every second week. Meat and fish are stored in the freezer in the Storeroom (poultry will not be provided due to the current danger of Avian Flu). After 14 days these supplies will be replenished. If these products are exhausted before that time there will be no extra delivery unless ordered from your budget.

Big Brother will supply the following items for free:
Washing Powder
Cleaning Materials
Tampons / sanitary towels
Condoms
Toilet Paper
Soap
Sunblock
Insect Repellant

ii.Weekly Budget
Over and above the provision of the basics, Housemates will receive a weekly budget to spend each week during shopping hour. The items should be typed onto the interactive shopping application and be completed within an hour.

The currency in the Big Brother house is the Naira. Each housemate will be granted XXX Naira each week, or XX Naira per day (Amounts TBC). Housemates have to pool this money and decide what they are going to spend it on collectively. If housemates do not spend the full budget within any given week, the remaining money will be added to the following week’s budget. Obviously every time someone leaves the house there is less money to spend.

Each Monday, apart from the first Monday, Big Brother will provide a list of the items available from a large supermarket and the prices of each item. These are the only items you may order. You may not request specific brands. Big Brother will provide the requested goods on Tuesday.

The weekly budget can be increased through wagering it against the successful completion of the weekly task.

Hygiene and laundry

The house is your home and it is the responsibility of all housemates to maintain and clean the house. Garbage will be collected weekly from the large bins at the bottom of the garden.

Big Brother will supply laundry services for towels and linen only. All beds will be supplied with two sets of linen. Every Friday Big Brother willthe Storeroom for dirty towels and linen. If laundry is not left in the Storeroom on Friday it will not be washed. Towels are returned the same day, linen is returned on Saturday. A washtub is provided outside for washing other laundry. Please use the soak-away drain to dispose of dirt water to avoid drowning the garden.

Tasks & Challenges

Big Brother can give the Housemates tasks, tests and challenges at any time.

i. Budget tasks
Every Monday Housemates receive a weekly assignment, which they have to accomplish together. They must then decide how much of the weekly budget they will bet against their successful completion of that assignment - a minimum of 25% and a maximum of 100%.
If the assignment is accomplished successfully, the budget of the next week is raised as follows: your basic + percentage wagered. If the assignment is not accomplished successfully, the budget will be your basic minus percentage wagered.

The weekly tasks are not optional. All Housemates have to participate. Failure to do so could result in non-successful completion of the task and/or an additional percentage of the budget being removed and/or punitive measures being taken against the individual non-participating Housemate. The task will be judged on a Thursday evening.

ii. Ad hoc tasks
In addition to the weekly tasks Big Brother will also set shorter ad-hoc tasks.

Prohibited Behaviour

Big Brother is a game that encourages individual expression. However, there are two types of behaviour that will not, under any circumstances, be tolerated in the Big Brother house; namely -

·Violence
Any housemate who becomes violent will be removed from the house immediately.

·Offense
·If a housemate displays any overt offensive behaviour or engages in inflammatory speech on the basis of race, tribal profile, gender, religion, or politics, Big Brother will request that the Housemate modifies his/her behaviour. Failure to comply could result in disqualification. It is important to note that the existing defamation laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria apply in the Big Brother house, and caution is advised with regard to the use of specific names of public figures, whether overt or insinuated.
·Religion
·Due to the obvious sensitivity of religious debate anywhere in the world, including Nigeria, no religious discussion is allowed in the Big Brother Nigeria house. Housemates should however feel free to conduct whatever religious activity they feel they need to. Big Brother respects and recognises all world religions, and in this regard no special provision has been made for any one specific religion.

The Big Brother House

The house consists of the following:
-A Diary Room
·2 communal Bedrooms
·A Bathroom
·A Storeroom
·A largeplan living area and a fully equipped kitchen
·The Sweet and Sour Room
·A garden containing a barbeque area and a water-relaxation feature, as well as an outdoor shower.

i.Diary Room
The Diary Room is soundproofed and lockable and is the only room in the house where housemates can communicate with Big Brother. Like a personal journal or diary, Housemates are required to record a daily entry of their daily activities, thoughts and feelings. These thoughts will be filmed and could be included in the show. Failure to appear in the Diary Room when requested by Big Brother could result in disqualification. Big Brother is the only person who communicates with you - no personal names - just “Big Brother”.

Housemates will only use the Diary Room for the following reasons:

Nominating Housemates.
Announcing a voluntary exit.
Reporting that medical help is urgently required or any other emergency.
Reporting ‘serious personal problems’.
Daily Diary Sessions.
On request from Big Brother.
Consultation with a doctor or dentist.
Private counselling with a psychologist.

Big Brother reserves the right to terminate a conversation, or not respond to a Housemate directly. The Diary Room is the only room where a Housemate can talk privately with Big Brother. This means that a person may only enter the room if nobody else is inside.

ii. Bedrooms
There are two bedrooms upstairs in the house. The Housemates have to decide amongst themselves who will sleep where. Each bedroom contains infrared cameras capable of filming in the dark.

There will be two sets of duvets and sheets per bed.

Storage space in the house is limited. There is no hanging space and limited packing space. Smoking will only be allowed outside in the garden.

iii. Bathroom
The bathroom has one sink, an isolated shower and a toilet. The shower will only have hot water for the total of 1 hour every day. The shower has no camera directly aimed to its interior, and consists of a frosted glass door.

iv. Toilet
Big Brother undertakes never to broadcast any footage from the toilet unless the room is used for anything other than its intended function.

v. Kitchen
The contents of the kitchen include the worktop, cooking facilities, refrigerator, storage cupboards and washing-up unit.

vi. Lounge/Dining area
The Lounge/dining area isplan. It will contain a dining table and 12 chairs and a comfortable, Nigerian-flavoured lounge suite.

vii. Storeroom
Any goods provided to the housemates are delivered via the storeroom. The door to the storeroom is locked and onlyd for a total of ½ an hour per day.

viii. Barbeque area and water-relaxation feature
The garden contains a barbeque area and a water-relaxation feature (TBC)

The water-relaxation feature (pool or Jacuzzi) needs to be cleaned once a week. Big Brother will inform you as to when this will happen.

ix. The Sweet and Sour Room
This is a punishment/treat room situated downstairs. The Housemate being punished will be required to persuade a fellow Housemate to volunteer themselves for the punishment. In the event that no-one volunteers, Big Brother will elect a housemate at random. In other words, two people will be punished for one Housemate’s wrongdoing.
Punishable offenses include, but are not limited to:
· Microphone infringements
· Tampering with technical equipment
· Ignoring/rudeness to Big Brother
· Misuse of Big Brother property
· Conspiracy talk

The nature of the punishment in the Room will be revealed to you during the course of your stay in the Big Brother House. This room will be used at Big Brother’s discretion.

And remember…
Big Brother reserves the right to change the rules at any time.

Use of the interior

Housemates must keep their House clean and tidy themselves.

Please note: Housemates will have to clean all windows, including those overlooking the Garden, once a week or at Big Brother’s request.

The cameras, camera windows, lenses etc. also have to be kept clean. Big Brother will supply the cleaning materials and products for the Camera Windows.

The lighting throughout the House is controlled by Big Brother. Exceptions to this are the standard lamps in the Living Area, and the lights in the Bedrooms. The Housemates can switch these on and off themselves.

Cameras, microphones, transmitters and batteries

i. General
One of the key elements of the Big Brother project is the permanent presence of cameras and microphones to record what is happening in the House 24 hours a day. In addition to the cameras and the fixed microphones, each Housemate will be obliged to wear his/her own microphone and transmitter at all times. The microphones and transmitters may only be removed when sleeping, taking a shower or when in the water-relaxation feature.

Each Housemate must, of course, handle all the equipment with care and in the appropriate manner.

ii. Cameras
All the cameras in the House must be able to operate unobstructed. This means that no camera may be covered up, tampered with or damaged or rendered defective in any way. The windows of the camera areas must be kept clear and clean at all times. “Clear” means that the windows in front of the cameras must not be taped up or covered and the view through them must not be obstructed in any other way. “Clean” means that the Housemates must clean the camera windows regularly, on Big Brother’s instruction. This also applies to the camera lenses. Big Brother will make special cleaning equipment available to the Housemates for this purpose.

iii. Microphones
The microphones must also be able to operate without obstruction. Therefore no microphone may be covered, taped up, damaged, used as a lassoo, glued or rendered defective. This also means, for example, that you may not use household or other appliances (whether electrically-operated or not) to interfere with the operation of the device in order to cover up conversations or other noises. This applies to all fixed microphones and the microphones worn by the Housemates.

iv. Transmitters
Each Housemate will be obliged to wear a transmitter and pouch at all times. When you go to sleep you should hang your transmitter pouch on the hooks provided. Every sleeping place will have its own hook. To ensure their proper working, the transmitters must never be switched off!

v. Batteries
The transmitters are battery-operated. These batteries must be changed on Big Brother’s instruction. Two boxes will be provided in the Diary Room – one is for old batteries and one will have fresh batteries available for the change. When a battery change is called for, one housemate should make sure they receive an old battery and deliver a new battery to every housemate. The transmitters and microphones, must be removed when sleeping, or when showering or entering the Jacuzzi and placed in the mic-pouches provided.

If occupants attempt to communicate without the cameras or microphones recording the communication (e.g. tampering with microphones, writing secret messages, whispering or mouthing words off camera) or if they try to tamper with or cover recording equipment Big Brother reserves the right to expel the occupant.

Health and safety

i. Safety
Big Brother has taken every possible precaution to guarantee contestant safety.

Smoking is not allowed in the interior of the house.

Should Big Brother announce that all housemates make their way to a designated area of the house, all Housemates should do this immediately.
Should a Housemate ever see a technician do not communicate with them and move away from their immediate vicinity.

Although the Big Brother House is protected by stringent security measures, it is still possible for something from outside the House to land, for example, in the garden at any time. Items that do not originate from Big Brother should be delivered to Big Brother immediately.

ii. Accident and illness
In the event of an accident a first aid kit can be found in the Kitchen.

A doctor may also visit if someone falls seriously ill. The Diary Room is ‘ 24 hours a day and can therefore be accessed at any time to report that medical help is required.

iii. Fire
The following fire precautions have been taken:

In the House there are 3 fire extinguishers. These are located in the Lounge, Dining Room and Kitchen. 2 external fire extinguishers one to the right of the patio door and one mounted inside The Sin Bin.
There is at least 1 smoke alarm in every room.

iv. Other Emergencies

· Family crisis
Should there be any extreme crisis in a contestant’s family or private life outside of the show, Big Brother will communicate this to them. Should a housemate and Big Brother decide that the nature of this crisis means that they have to leave for any protracted time, they will not be allowed to re-enter the house and may be replaced.

· Chronic illness
If a medical professional is required for minor treatments, they will enter the house and treat the patient in the Diary Room. If a Housemate needs hospital treatment, Big Brother will judge whether the housemate may return to the house. No communication with external parties is allowed unless absolutely necessary.

· Psychologist
A Psychologist will be available to all the housemates for counselling, either on request or if Big Brother feels it is necessary.

In all other cases you must follow Big Brother’s instructions at all times.

What can be taken into the house?

Two suitcases will be provided for each housemate. Occupants are allowed to bring one suitcase of clothes in to the house and one small suitcase of personal belongings e.g. books, cigarettes, photos. No other bags or baggage are allowed.
The suitcases will be the same size for all occupants.
Occupants are also allowed to bring a musical instrument into the house but only those that do not require amplification.
Big Brother will check the contents of both suitcases before the occupants enter the house, a list will be made of the contents, when an occupant leaves the house all the things that were brought in have to be taken out. Any prohibited items will be confiscated before entry and returned after ejection.
Any hobby that doesn’t require electricity can be brought in if it is cleared beforehand by Big Brother.

Each person can only bring in 2 books.

Each occupant can bring in only 1 of each of the following: toothpaste, moisturising cream, shaving foam, shampoo, conditioner, hair gel/hairspray, unless agreed beforehand by Big Brother.
