Yinka Sets the Record Straight

Thank you for the messages you posted for Yinka before and after he was evicted from the Big Brother house on Sunday. Now that he is sitting poolside at a hotel in Lagos and receiving room service at will - rather than dealing with Chinedu and co. - we posed your questions to him…

lukmon (3/19/2006 19:54) - How did you feel when your name was called for eviction for a second time?

Yinka: I felt good, ecstatic, happy. I have asthma so I felt like going home after we started doing compulsory exercise. The other Housemates thought I was a threat. By the second nomination they knew me a little better, so they must have just felt threatened. Helen kept saying that she didn’t get me, which is why I had a talk with her on the last night explaining what I’m all about, in case we don’t get another chance to talk.

I did what I went into the house to do: I made a name for myself. I can now pursue my music and modeling career.

Tich (3/18/2006 13:20) - Do you think you were true to yourself in the House? If so, in retrospect, is there anything you would have done differently to stay longer?

Yinka: I didn’t really fit in because of my enormous size and disposition. I wasn’t going to bend over backwards to try and make anybody like me.

Iyke: (3/20/2006 17:57) - If given a second chance to go back into the House, what would you want to do better?

Yinka: Try to smile a bit more, but not because of my fellow Housemates.

oladotun (3/20/2006 00:22) - Who was the most real person in the house?

Yinka: Joan, with a question mark. Joan is a calculating person.

Julia (3/18/2006 12:30) - Who was your most annoying/entertaining Housemate?

Yinka: Chinedu and Helen were the most annoying. Helen accused me of not being a team player. She kept trying to assess people; I asked her, 'Who made you Big Brother?' She deliberately tries to find fault with other Housemates so that she can come out like a saint. She is an actress, trained for the cameras.

Adebola (3/18/2006 12:06) - Will you watch the show now that you’ve been evicted?

Yinka: I like to read the SMSes. It’s funny that people only want to see the love drama - it’s not a match-making show. That’s why Ebuka thinks Francisca is putting him in a bad light because he is not interested in her. Ebuka wants to win but he can’t please everybody [in the audience]. I wanted to win too but I was not willing to compromise my principles.

Desmond (3/17/2006 15:37) - Yinka, Frank [was] your best friend in the House - [are you annoyed that he nominated] you for eviction?

Yinka: I like Frank but Frank is also two-faced. Chinedu, Helen and Joseph, I expected. People gave pathetic reasons for nominating me, like that I was homesick. I have been living by myself for a while now so I was not homesick for my parents, but I may have been homesick for my own apartment and doing things my way.

Gloria (3/26/2006 5:37:34 PM) Yinka, why did you cause a quarrel between Chinedu and Joan? Why... when you knew you would soon be leaving the house? Were you scared of saying it before...?

Yinka: Gideon knew Chinedu from school. Ebuka knows Chinedu from the BBN auditions - they have formed a clique. I was friendly with Joan because I can’t be enemies with everyone. I made a remark to Joan that Chinedu is always by her side. I wasn’t being critical; it can even be seen as a compliment. Joan agreed with me. Chinedu became angry saying, “I thought you were my boy…” Chinedu is the calculating lover boy. He is a good game player. He is always trying to be louder than everyone else; he’s immature. Had he approached me the way he did [on Friday] outside the house… I was a bit restrained. I don’t resort to violence easily. I didn’t tell the girl to dump him. I didn’t even know they had an argument - I was reading my book. Chinedu went to the other guys to discuss me with them.

On food in the house: Why do people always make the big guy the fall guy? I eat. I have to eat three meals a day. In the house people did notice but Helen would give bigger pieces of meat to some Housemates, like Ebuka: his pieces were always chunky.

On his book: I wish I had a computer - I would be working on my manuscript right now. I have had writer's block from time to time but I hope to finish my book by the end of the year.

On the girls: My ideal woman would have been a girl with Joan’s head on Helen’s body. I’d have said, “You and me after the show.” That’s all.

On Ify: She did my hair twice. I asked her, 'Don’t you braid your boyfriend’s hair? Can you do mine?' She probably also did it to win points with the audience.

On Frank and Francisca: He doesn’t like her - she may be a threat to him. Maybe it’s because she’s a very good dancer

On people’s reaction to seeing him after Big Brother: I’ve met people who say you are the most realistic person. None of my friends have DStv so nobody who knows me is sending SMSes so I am glad to see SMSes that are supportive of me.

On the two new Housemates: Sandra – there will be animosity in the near future. She is competition for all the girls. Helen is doing the sister thing right now but she is definitely threatened. And Maureen too. Katung is direct competition for Ebuka. Ebuka has been more vocal since yesterday, rowdier than usual...

Yinka’s closing statement: I had fun in the house. I appreciate both the negative and positive comments. I wasn’t lazy: I did chores religiously. I even cooked two meals in one day, one ogusi soup and the other a pasta dish. Watch my eviction party on Channel O! I will also be performing.
