Africans in Panama

They are a mixed bunch - some tall, some small, some quiet and contemplative while others are loud and impulsive.

With the possible exception of the tall and slender Derrick and Nana is the oldest male, but his ‘been there done that' countenance, matched with his hard body, says he can probably match the youngsters in any physical test. Leonard's body has gone a bit soft since his rugby playing days - but the game of Survivor doesn't rest on physicality alone, or the women would have to pack their bags right from the start, they can't match the muscle bound boys pound for pound. Not that these women are push-overs, Freida has the determination of a bulldog. Nike is as strong as an ox and so is Meti seems to be all sweetness and light, but will her aerobics routine prove to be her secret weapon?

They were handpicked from thousands of African entries, to represent diverse character types and cultures. How will these contestants fare? Some have tried to prepare themselves mentally and physically, most are typical city slickers and have no experience of the outdoors. Some know the show backwards and have been avid fans since its conception; others haven't even seen one episode.

And the Tribes are...

After a grueling three day trip across thousands of kilometers, they finally stepped off a twin engine aircraft onto the patchy tarmac of Saboga Airport in Panama's Pearl Islands ‧ and straight into the game of Survivor Africa.

Survivor Africa host Leonard, Ario, Nike. In the red Kuna tribe (named after a traditionally matriarchal and politically organised people) are Nana, Freida, Meti. Each group was handed a carved scepter and flag representing their tribes and then it was time to begin the first task.

Survival shopping...

They were each to take some local currency (called Balboa) and had five minutes in which to purchase anything they might find useful from the village shops. The tolling of the church bell would signal the end of their hunt for the essential survival tools that would be their sole possessions for the hectic trial ahead.

Having just been organised into teams, the contestants had the difficult task of shopping together, within a tight time limit. Chipo seemed to take charge for Kuna whilst Ario was Embera's ‘leader'.

Both teams tried to purchase goods that would be useful in building shelters and in cooking ‧ rope, a wok, a tarps. Only Embera managed to purchase some rice however, sure to be an advantage in a game where they will only be eating what they can forage for or catch.

Their next challenge was to determine which of the two islands the tribes would have to call home.

The long swim home...

On an old ship that resembled a pirate's vessel, tribes competed against each other for the first time. Paired against each other, tribe representatives had to lunge forward and grab a large wooden stick as it ejected out of a wooden wheel. Six rounds were to be played and after each round the winner would be allowed to loot one item from the stash the opposing tribe had just acquired ‧ pirate style. The tribe that won the most rounds got to be taken to their island by boat, whilst the other team had to swim there. Kuna, defeated but not deflated, faced the music and jumped into the ocean, after the possessions that Anthony, the Host, had thrown in. They swam to their new island home, arriving exhilarated by their effort and ready to set-up for the encroaching night ahead.

Having been deposited on the bank of their new island home, Embera must have felt happy to be dry, at least, but they were no less looking forward to the long night ahead.

For the next 11 episodes, these 12 people are going to have the adventure of a lifetime. Each has their own strategy but the one thing they all have in common is the desire to win the US$100 000.00 prize money for being the sole survivor.
