Here at Bigbrothernigeria.com headquarters, one of the benefits is that we get to speak to those in the know, to bring you exclusive information about everything to do with Big Brother Nigeria and beyond. We sat down with the two big men of Big Brother Nigeria, Obi Asika (Chairman of Storm Vision Limited) and Andrew Wilson (our esteemed Director) to give you the final sum up of who, what, when, and how…basically, all the questions you wanted to know...
What has been your biggest challenge while making Big Brother Nigeria? Obi: Just getting it done, dealing with sponsors, suppliers, crew, different cultures, the press...Having to become a public figure as the face of the production, making sure that our content was always world-class and insuring that we were always representative of our people, our country and our culture. Andrew: I think being away from home rates high up there, along with the infamous Lagos traffic. On a content note, it was a challenge to strike a balance between ‘psyching-out’ the Housemates when needed, and allowing them the freedom to express themselves without any added tension.
What aspect of the show has surprised you the most? Obi: The Fan Clubs and the talents of the Housemates, if you were part of the audition process you would have never known… Andrew: Not that it was a surprise, but a welcome prediction – that the show would be extremely popular all over Africa, and in Nigeria-the extent of this was surprising, and the extent of the support from all over the continent for the show. What was pleasing was the positive way the Nigerian people responded with such warmth and involvement.
What has the reaction to BBN been in Nigeria? Obi: Huge positive reaction, there are always haters but most people seem to have loved the show and agree that it has given a great positive push to Nigeria and her image internationally. It seems that all ages were into the show from 8-80. We have received support from all levels of society, the Nigerian Press has done a huge job and really needs to be commended for the way in which they have reported the process. Andrew: Very positive, beyond expectation. They took the show to their hearts and lived each moment with those Housemates. Their positive reaction to Nigeria and Nigerians being in the media spotlight was overwhelming.
Do you have a favourite Housemate? Obi:I don’t think that I should really comment on that, but from the outset I liked, in no particular order, Joan for her attitude, Ebuka for his demeanour, Gideon for the star quality and Katung was always ice cold. Andrew: No. They all gave so much of themselves in such different ways that it’s difficult to have a favourite.
What was your favourite moment in the House? Obi: The 'Our week in the House' song, the Minister of Information in the House, 2Face in the House, Chinedu and Joan’s first kiss, and Frank taking a shower naked in the garden. Andrew: Ify’s baked Alaska collapsing, Chinedu’s (sometimes) moaning and rebellious attitude towards Big Brother, Frank’s exuberance, Francisca playing the House help in the Soapie, Katung losing the football over the wall and Ify’s reaction, and many more too numerous to mention!
What was your worst moment in the House? Obi: The day we went off air for a couple of hours. Andrew: When they threw the switch and the lights went dark in the House. And it’s all over.
Can you give us a brief run-through your average day with Big Brother Nigeria? Obi: All day being available to the production, to M-Net, to the Press, to the Housemates, to email, and to answer questions. Andrew: Generally every day is spent monitoring the House, checking on the progression of Tasks, meetings with Task producers to ensure everything’s on track and everyone’s on the same page, juggling the schedules to come, actioning the sourcing of celebs, meeting with the Live Show Producer, briefing editors on the structure of highlights shows and nomination shows, scripting and conceptualising promo’s, viewings in edit of promo’s, highlights shows and so on, balancing product placement related tasks, getting through e-mails – each day might look like most or all of the above. But the day never really ends, as I’m often on the phone to the MCR (control room) or location as I watch the show live in the hotel room.
BBN generated a lot of controversy, and is currently being investigated for vote-rigging. What are your feelings on this/can you comment? Obi: I have to comment. The investigation is totally without basis, some fan club members petitioned the Consumer Protection Council who have a job to do but instead of doing just that someone decided to make it a news affair. We feel that no one and nothing should be allowed to tarnish what was an unbelievable show. I want to assure all that the voting process was completely transparent and none of us in production, management or anywhere else could manipulate the process
What makes BBN important? Obi: It brought a country together, introduced Africa to real Naija people, allowed us to showcase so much of Naija to the world, it is the largest show of it’s kind and it is a tribute to Nigeria and her people that I can confidently say we could make at least another five BBNs. Also in terms of training and empowerment BBN has presented huge opportunities to our local crew (numbering almost 150 people) in terms of training, new technology and new processes. Andrew: It gave a country a stronger sense of self, it reflected to society some aspects of Nigerian youth and many aspects of Nigerian culture, it showed the rest of the continent some important facets of Nigerian culture and people which they would never otherwise have seen. It showed the Housemates’ strength of character and I think it gave, in the end, a very positive experience to viewers.
Andrew, as a South African, have you found that your views of Nigerians have changed throughout the show? Andrew: As with many South Africans my knowledge of Nigeria was very limited. And any perceptions I had was all of course based on complete ignorance of what Nigeria and its people were like. Even now I wouldn’t presume to generalise, but the Nigerian people I met, worked with and grew to know were gentle, polite, creative, imaginative and really wonderful people, and best of all, blessed with a wonderful sense of humour. You’d have to have a sense of humour in the Lagos traffic, I guess!
Are you surprised by the popularity of the Housemates outside the House? Obi: Not at all, they were a great bunch and I wish all of them the best. Andrew: Not at all. The fact that they’ve all mostly gone on to achieve good things for themselves and the community might indicate that we chose well – or rather, that they chose themselves well, because it was their specific characters that got them chosen – the fact that they were who they were.
Any insider gossip/ funny stories that you can share with us? Obi: Ify said “Do you feel me” so many times that in the MCR (Master Control Room), we called her Ja Rule Andrew: Like any gridiron football coach might say to the team: “What happens in this changing room, stays in this changing room!”
What’s the buzz on BBN 2? Obi: We want to do it, we know the fans want it, so keep watching this space and hopefully it will be bigger and better than BBN 1.
